Civil War All Silk Regulation 34 Star US Cavalry Swallowtail Guidon with Intriguing Provenance. Overall 26" x 36" excluding the 2" pole sleeve. Excellent sound condition. A few scattered holes, primarily the result of pressure at the folds during storage. Missing most of one star, slight bleeding of the red stripes into the white, probably the result of use. Really as nice an example of this rare flag we've ever seen. The pole sleeve is lined with white cotton for reinforcement. Pinned to the flag is a period ink script note bearing the following inscription "given to Grandfather Dunbar by Colonel Aiken Civil War 1861 - 65". Origin of the note likely late 19th century. Although there are several Aikens/ Aikins who present the possibility of being the Col. Aiken in question we have not been able to firmly identify him, and there is the very real possibility that Aiken did, in fact, attain the rank of Colonel after the Civil War, either in Federal or militia service. Certainly worthy of further research. A most rare Civil War regulation cavalry flag with but a handful of specimens known, because of their incredibly fragile method of fabrication, and the only example we've ever had the opportunity to catalog.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
