Chasseur Style Civil War US Infantry Officer's Kepi. Constructed of fine quality blue wool, standing 3" high in the front. Retains the original bullion embroidered infantry officer's hunting horn insignia on the front. Single strand of black silk quatrefoil on the crown with black silk piping at the seams. Rather large oilcloth bound visor with green Moroccan leather on the underside. 3/8" wide leather chin strap with leather adjusting loops and period eagle staff buttons. 1½" high maroon Moroccan leather sweat band. Black silk lining somewhat tattered but 70% intact, with tarred leather crown. A few scattered moth holes, most notably along the right edge of the crown, but minor and detract little. Although unidentified, the hat carries a verbal history of having belonged to a Rhode Island officer. Nice piece of Civil War Union headgear.
