    Description

Champion Sub-Killer Submarine of WWII - USS Batfish (SS-310. USS Batfish (SS-310), is a Balao-class submarine commissioned in1943; the first US warship named for the tropical Pacific fish. She made seven war patrols during WWII. She went on to serve in Korea and is now a Museum Ship in Oklahoma.

The flag of the Batfish is a cotton, 34" X 57", 48-star, screen dyed starfield, sewn stripe flag finished with a heading and grommets. The flag is inscribed, "9 ?" "USS BATFISH 310" between the markings are drawings of a Japanese submarine and a bat holding two torpedoes.

The USS Batfish served between December 1943 and August 1945. She would make seven war patrols, operating in the Pacific east of Japan, in the Philippine Sea, the Luzon Strait, and the South China Sea. Her Battle flag claims 14 ships sunk. Officially, she is credited with nine confirmed kills. Her greatest success came during her sixth war patrol. Departing from Pearl Harbor on December 30, 1944, she was bound for the South China Sea west of the Philippines. Batfish was equipped with the latest in Allied radar technology. Able to scan for both aircraft and vessels she could also locate Japanese ships by their radar signals.

In early 1945, the Imperial Japanese Navy was extracting experienced pilots from the Philippines by submarine. Batfish was able to radar locate and intercept three of the four boats thought to have been operating out of the Philippines. Between February 10 and 13, 1945, she is credited with sinking the RO-115, RO-112, and the RO-113. Not the highest number nor the greatest tonnage, but she is the only US submarine to sink three enemy boats in as many days. For this feat of arms, General Douglas MacArthur personally presented the boat with the Navy Presidential Unit Citation. Her skipper, Commander John K. Fyfe (USNA '36), was awarded the Navy Cross.

This flag provides a unique opportunity for a collector of the submarine service, Pacific War, and WWII artifacts.

For her service, the USS Batfish was awarded the: Navy Presidential Unit Citation, American Campaign Medal, Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal with nine campaign stars, and the WWII Victory Medal.

Condition: The flag of the USS Batfish is in good condition. It is used, worn, and soiled. It has several tears and splits at the fly edge and both fly corners are worn away.

This flag was formerly in the collection of Dr. Clarence Rungee, and is accompanied by his original museum inventory sheet with identifying information.
