    Description

Cased Silver Lifesaving Medal Awarded to Hans Berg "For Bravely Rescuing a Shipmate", July 17, 1908. One of the more beautiful medal designs, this second type award, designed in 1882, features an ornate eagle head device from which is suspended a 45mm in diameter silver medal. The obverse features a man is struggling in a heavy sea with the figure of a woman offering him a long line hovering above him. The entire scene is contained within a raised border with the caption above "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" in raised letters; and below "ACT OF CONGRESS JUN 20, 1874". The scene is a symbolic representation of a courageous rescue at sea, which represents the purpose of this medal. The reverse center of the medal is engraved "To / Hans Berg / Coxswain / U.S.R.C.S. / For Bravely Rescuing / A Shipmate / July 17, 1908" and is encircled by a laurel wreath tied at its base with a bow. The wreath is contained within a raised border which bears the inscription in raised letters, "IN TESTAMENT OF HEROIC DEEDS IN SAVING LIFE FROM THE PERILS OF THE SEA". At the bottom of the medal, separating the beginning and ending of the inscription, is a stylized laurel wreath. The medal is suspended by a 2" wide light blue silk ribbon. The medal is housed in the original fitted, leatherette-covered case. The case is scuffed and worn at the edges with some loss of leather on the bottom; the lid is precariously attached, otherwise the medal itself is in excellent condition. The lot also includes Berg's Coast Guard dog tag, a CDV of Berg as a baby posed with his sisters, a photograph of Berg, in uniform, taken about the time of his lifesaving act, a copy of his Record of Internment in Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery, and a one page letter dated 1976 presenting Berg's dog tag, the photographs, and internment document to the collector who originally purchased the medal.

Hans Berg and fellow shipmate, Alfred Strom were both awarded the Silver Lifesaving Medal for rescuing a shipmate who had fallen overboard the revenue cutter Algonquin near Puerto Plato, Santo Domingo in July 17, 1908.
