Cased Set of Napoleonic Medals Engraved by Bertrand Andrieu Made For the British Market After the Fall of Napoleon, Circa 1815.
Ten medals on two trays (2 large medals on one tray; 8 on the other) in fitted compartments and housed in a leather-covered wooden box constructed to look like a gilt-edge folio (10 ¾ x 14-inches) book. The first tray includes the following medals: The Siege of the Bastille (63mm), Arrival of the King at Paris (81mm), Passage of the Great St. Bernard (61mm), Battle of Marengo (61mm), Napoleon the Emperor (62mm), Napoleon Emperor and King (62mm), Josephine Empress and Queen (63mm) and Marie Louise Imperatrice (63mm). The second tray includes: Two large (138mm) bust portrait medals of Napoleon I. The medals appear to be struck on the obverse only. The case features extensive gilt stamped decoration, much of it Napoleon related, e.g. bees, eagles, his "N" cypher. The spine of the case is gilt stamped "Napoleon Medals" and "Andrieu" is gilt-stamped at the lower edge of the spine.

Bertrand Andrieu (1761-1822) was a French engraver of medals and during the last twenty years of his life, the French government commissioned him to undertake every major work of importance.

Condition: Very good. The medals have sharp detail and exhibit little evidence of handling. The faux-book case is worn along the edges with scuffing and general wear elsewhere. The top lid is detached.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
