Captured and Identified Civil War Confederate Cedar Wood Canteen.
This is the exact canteen, with accompanying tin cup and sling, pictured at the bottom of page 36 in Stephen W. Sylvia and Michael J. O'Donnell's book Civil War Canteens (Moss Publications, Orange, Virginia 1983). The portion of the canteen pictured in the book exhibits the carving on the face which is done in script, "B. J. Tuttle / Comp. A 13th Regt / S. C. V." along with a paper label that is badly faded and difficult to read but one can clearly see "Rebel Canteen" along with the name (H.) A. Mix at the top. The reverse of the canteen is carved at the top, also in script "G. C. H. Collins / 27th / Regt. / C. V. " and in the center of the canteen "Taken Prisnor [sic] / May 3d 1863 / Paroled May 13th / 1863" at which time the canteen was apparently returned to Tuttle after having been in the possession of Collins. Collins joined the 27th Connecticut on October 18, 1862 and was mustered out July 27, 1863. The canteen is 7 3/8 x 2 3/8-inches with iron bands and shaped loops with a Confederate cotton sling with iron roller buckle and accompanied by the crude tin drinking cup which bears no identification to either Tuttle or Collins. The unusual wooden spout of the canteen is actually fabricated from a thread spindle. Doubtless additional fascinating history is to be discovered by deciphering the two period labels on either side of the canteen. Great set with superb documentation. A copy of Civil War Canteens accompanies the lot.

    Condition: Excellent, see description above.
