    Captain William Alexander Throop: 1st Michigan [WIA Gettysburg] Foot Locker and Print.
    24" wide x 12" deep x 16.5" tall, blue-painted wooden chest with wrought-iron rat-tail hinge and carrying handles. The front has a stenciled inscription: "Capt. Wm. A. Throop/ 1st Mich. I." Throop (1838-1884), a native of Detroit, enlisted at the very start of the war, on April 18, 1861. He served in Companies A & F, 1st Regiment Michigan Infantry. He rose to the rank of Brevet Major General, effective March 13, 1865. He was wounded in action four times: June 27,1862 Gaines' Mill, July 2, 1863 Gettysburg, May 30, 1864 Cold Harbor and July 30, 1864 Petersburg. The chest has some chips and scrapes, but it is quite sound. The robin's-egg blue paint is a distinctive feature and all-original to the piece. Sold together with a framed 10.75" x 6.5" hand-colored engraving by E. N. Rosenthal of Philadelphia, titled "Camp Union, Col. Jno. C. Robinson, 1st Mich. Infantry." Signed by the owner, James M. Vankuren. Attractive blue & gold border. Not examined out of frame.
