Campbell Dalrymple. Extracts From a Military Essay, Containing: Relections on the Raising, Arming, Cloathing and Discipline of the British Infantry and Cavalry. (Philadelphia: Humphryes, Bell, and Aitken, 1776). First American edition. Octavo. 31 pages. Eight engraved plates, including two fold-out. Contemporary leather boards, both detached and missing the spine panel. Text block sound with some damp staining and scattered foxing, otherwise in very good condition and worthy of conservation. A British Army training manual "pirated" and co-opted for use by the Continental Army. The fledgling army was without much in the way of military material or standardized training methods so the exigencies of war necessitated literally taking a page from the British playbook. The book primarily deals with the proper way to form lines of battle and marching order.
