    C. 1840 Cased American Amputation Kit The original walnut case is 10" X 17" X 2 3/4" high when closed. It closes with two brass hooks and a lock which retains the original key. Brass bail handle on the lid. There is a line crack across the grain on the lid, but intact and seems to be quite sound, else the case is in excellent condition. Red velvet lined with French style casing for the instruments. Retains the original card/label from "J. H. Gemrig / Manufacturer Of / Surgical & Dental / Instruments / Trusses & Bandages / 43 S. 8th St. Philad'a". The capital saw is 15" overall with silvered brass rib on the top of the blade and two silvered brass screws with silver brass backplate on the obverse for holding the blade in place. These pieces retain 80% of the original silver. Blade near perfect with just a few scattered stains and marked "Evans". Pistol grip rosewood handle with finger hole and finger loops, in about perfect condition, just one tiny hairline. The metacarpal bow saw is 9" overall with faceted rosewood handle and 3 3/4' blued steel blade with thumbscrew for tightening. Completely unmarked and in about perfect condition. The lidded compartment in the recess contains several surgical suture needles and thread. Case also retains one unmarked retractor. The brass tourniquet is in excellent complete condition and is inscribed Dr. on one side and Agnew on the other, obviously the original owner. The set is missing the four amputation knives along with the suturing needle holder and a small unidentified instrument. Despite the missing pieces this remains a desirable and scarce American surgical / amputation kit and especially interesting with the original lable and ID.

The pre and post sales experience was wonderful and flawless. Heritage has the best in-house operation I have ever seen and their people are not only professional but fun to work with, especially Steve C.

As for Heritage's online system… Yes the interface is more complex than what we are used to with SAN but what is behind that interface is amazing for sellers and buyers alike. It is real time and for a real serious auction buyer there is nothing better in the auction industry, bar none.
