    C. 1840 American Bass Drum with Great Mexican War History. 17 1/2" high with 23" diameter. Drum is completely untouched, and retains the original heads, hoops,. rope, tighteners and 2 3/8" wide original red, white and blue, cotton sling, with snaps. The body was originally painted in a red swirl, artificial grain, pattern, most of which remains although much of it under many years of dirt and grime. Overall very good sound condition and would clean nicely. The noteworthy seams on both the body and hoops are typical of a drum from this early period. Brass tack decoration around the air hole, most of which remains. The top head, somewhat crumpled and dry but 100% intact, bears the following 19th century ink inscription, "This drum is supposed to be 106 years old. It went through the Mexican War. The holes in the hoop filled with putty were made by grape shot at the time Gen. Santa Anna lost his wooden leg at the Battle of Buena Vista. This drum has gone through most all political campaigns since the Mexican War up until recent years. It has been in the possession of T. J. Wade for 40 years." Thomas J. Wade was born in Indiana in 1831 and was living in Vernon, Washington Co. Indiana in 1860. Careful examination of the drum yields what is apparently the entrance hole opposite the air hole, with the bulge near the air hole caused by the inside of the body being struck by the shot. A wonderful piece of history and with cleaning actually a very attractive drum
