    Description

British Campaign Medal: South Africa Medal with "1877-8-9" Bar, 1877-79, named to "SERGT W. RUSSELL, NATAL NATIVE CONGT". Very fine. Russell was one of four regimental sergeants of the 1st Battalion, 3rd Regiment, Natal Native Contingent killed at Isandlwana.

In 1878 the British High Commissioner of Southern Africa, worried about growing strength of the Zulu king Cetshwayo, ordered an invasion of Zululand. The British troops were divided into five columns. The second and third columns under the command of Col. Glyn, with Lord Chelmsford, the Commander-in-Chief, accompanying him, crossed the Buffalo River at Rorke's Drift and invaded Zululand. Leading the number three column were mounted troops and the 1st Regiment, 3rd Natal Native Contingent, auxiliary native troops, many of whom were renegade Zulus, commanded by White officers and non-commissioned officers. The 1/3rd NNC showed their worth when they attacked Sihayo's kraal on January 12, the day after Chelmsford crossed out of Natal and into Zululand. The British column established a camp in the shadow of a towering hill at a place called Isandlwana. On the morning of January 22, 1878 Lord Chelmsford divided his forces leaving 1,300 men, including elements of the 1st and 2nd battalions of the 24th Regiment of Foot (South Wales Borderers), Royal Artillery, and native levees, including the 1/3rd Natal Native Contingent, at the camp at Isandlwana.

Late in the morning of the 22nd, and estimated 20,000 Zulu warriors descended on the British camp. By sunset, the entire British command at Isandlwana was annihilated in one of Britain's most staggering military defeats. Later that day British military honor was restored when 139 soldiers of the 24th Regiment of Foot and African colonial troops withstood repeated attack by 3,000 to 4,000 Zulu warriors at the mission station of Rorke's Drift.

This was my first time dealing with an auction house, and I am 100% completely impressed with Heritage. There is not an aspect of this process that I have a critique for.
