British Campaign Medal: Egypt Service Medal with "Suakin 1885" Bar, 1882-1889. Named to "56, PTE R. McCOLE, N.S.W. INFY". A slight nick at the bottom, else, very fine.

The Sudan nominal roll shows a Private Patrick B. McCabe with the service number "56" in the New South Wales Infantry. McCabe was born in Sydney, N.S.W. on August 14, 1862. He enlisted on February 18, 1885 at the age of 22, embarked on SS Iberia on March 3, 1885, and returned to Australia on June 23, 1885 aboard the SS Arab.

With the news of General Charles Gordon's death at Khartoum in January 1885, the government of New South Wales offered the Imperial government in London a contingent of troops for the Sudan. London accepted marking the first time that soldiers in the pay of a self-governing Australian colony were to fight in an imperial war.

The contingent, an infantry battalion of 522 men and 24 officers and an artillery battery of 212 men, left Sydney amid much public fanfare on March 3, 1885. The NSW contingent anchored at Suakin, Sudan's Red Sea port, on 29 March 1885 and were attached to a brigade composed of Scots, Grenadiers and Coldstream Guards. By May 1885 the British government had decided to abandon the campaign and left only a garrison in Suakin. The Australian contingent sailed for home on 17 May 1885.

This was my first time dealing with an auction house, and I am 100% completely impressed with Heritage. There is not an aspect of this process that I have a critique for.
