Benicia Arsenal 1862 Dated Wooden Ammunition Crate. 29½" x 11" x 11½". Given the size, this wooden crate was most likely used for artillery ammunition. The crate is of mortised construction with two iron hinges, iron reinforcement bands on either end and an iron hasp. Sturdy rope carrying handles which appear original to the crate, are located on either end. The inside of the lid is stenciled marked "Benicia Arsenal./ Jan. 1862". The crate has an authentic well-used look and a previous owner has stenciled his name - "H. T. Ferguson" on the front of the crate. This would make a great display piece to lend interest to a Civil War tableau. Worn, but good condition.
