Beautiful Civil War US Captain of Infantry Frock Coat and Sash with Superb Period ID. The cotton lining in the left sleeve bears the ink stencil marking "Robinson 130NY", surrounded by scrollwork and a spread wing eagle above. John P. Robinson, aged 27, enlisted as a 1st Lieut. in the 130th New York on 8 /7/62. He was commissioned Captain 10/1/62. Robinson mustered out with the regiment 6/3/65 at Cloud's Mills, Va. The 130th New York was designated the 19th NY Cavalry on August 11, 1863 and, subsequently, the 1st New York volunteer dragoons. The regiment was very heavily fought, losing 130 men killed and mortally wounded.

Classic early war coat in fabrication and tailoring details. Fine quality dark blue wool, with 1 7/8" standup collar. Sleeves slightly 'puckered' at shoulders, ballooning to 9" at the elbow, then rapidly tapering to 5" at the cuff. Nine button front with Horstman & Allien eagle I buttons. Three small eagle I buttons at each functional cuff. Interestingly the tails exhibit New York state seal staff buttons with RMDC Steel & Johnson backmark. Raw cut at the bottom of the skirt. Black polished cotton lining with extensive quilting in both breasts. White cotton sleeve lining. Pockets at inside left breast and tails. Double gold bullion border and bars on the 1 3/4" X 4 3/4" shoulder straps, with blue velvet background, excellent. Coat overall in excellent, sound condition. Shows signs of some honest wear/use, but no open seams or tears. A number of small scattered moth holes on the exterior, minor, and really detract nothing from the appearance or desirability of the coat. Bright color, totally untouched and most impressive. The red/maroon silk sash is near perfect. 4" wide with just some fading on the 9" wood core tassels. A great Civil War officer's frock in terms of both visual impact and ID/history.

This was my first time dealing with an auction house, and I am 100% completely impressed with Heritage. There is not an aspect of this process that I have a critique for.
