    Description

Battle of Hampton Roads: C.S.S. Merrimac Grouping. Interesting group that relates to the most celebrated naval battle of the war that occurred on March 9, 1862 between the ironclads Monitor and Merrimac at Hampton Roads, Virginia. It includes an 1874 ALS of Admiral Franklin Buchanan, commander of the C.S.S. Merrimac, complying with an autograph request (with transmittal envelope), a clipped signature of the second-in-command, Catesby ap Roger Jones, who assumed command of the Merrimac when Buchanan was injured during the battle, a matted and shrink-wrapped engraving of the battle excised from Harper's or Leslie's, and a post-battle eyewitness account of the Merrimac by a Union soldier. The 4-page letter is written on bilfolium writing paper, Camp Hamilton, Virginia, April 13, 1862, In part: "... Friday morning the Merrimac, accompanied by seven other boats, paid us a visit at a respectable distance...The Merrimac laid near Sewall's point abreast of our camp, occasionally approaching quite near to us... her decks were crowded with men and she looked as formidable as she is... During the excitement... two rebel vessels approached near enough to our shore to seize three transports... all of Friday was spent by them in coaxing us to come out, but we had but one object in view that was to prevent the Merrimac from running the blockade... One shot was fired by the Merrimac, her last shot, which seem to explode the instance it left her gun, and by her subsequent movements we thought she had burst her gun as she immediately steamed for Norfolk leaving her escort behind... she is certain to be sunk if she ever passes Fortress Monroe..."
