Attractive Civil War Era Officer's Cap With its bright red woolen base and gold trim, this cap is a particularly colorful specimen possibly worn by an officer of a zouave company or an elite militia unit. The top of the 1 ½" wide red band is edged in a band of narrow gold, which continues up the front, back and sides, of the blue body and ends on the crown in a border of the same tape. From base to crown measures 4 inches. The ½" leather chinstrap has a thin bevel-edged buckle and is affixed by two staff officer buttons. Inside, the 1 ½" wide sweatband is completely intact as is the brown polished cotton lining. The visor is firmly affixed and extends 1 1/2 , with a green underside. Overall condition is excellent with only a few negligible moth holes. A particularly colorful cap from the time of the Civil War.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
