    Description

    The Battle of White Plains

American Revolution: Superlative Howe vs. Washington Map dated 1777. 22" x 30" hand-colored map titled: "A Plan of the Operation of the King's Army under the Command of General Sr. William Howe, K.B. in New York and New Jersey, against the American Forces Commanded by General Washington from the 12th of October to the 28th of November 1776 Wherein is particularly distinguished the Engagement on the White Plains." Published in London by Claude Joseph Southier and engraver W. Faden in 1777. Besides the archaic and charming names for locations we are familiar with today (e.g., Pisaick River, Hackinsack, Heights of Fordham, De Yonker, Tarry Town), the map depicts ships-of-war, fortifications, notations regarding troop movements, timelines, etc. Lord Cornwallis's activities are mentioned several times in connection with the garrison at Ft. Lee and the movement southward to Newark and [New] Brunswick. Pencil notation in upper left corner indicates this is a "second state". Central horizontal fold with faint discoloration from strip of binding or hinging tape on verso. A superb example overall.

This was my first time dealing with an auction house, and I am 100% completely impressed with Heritage. There is not an aspect of this process that I have a critique for.
