    A very rare American knife.

    American Bowie Knife by J & R Murphy Boston, Mass. C. 1855. John Murphy is listed in the Boston Directory in 1851 as a cutler, at 17 Harvard Place, he was joined in the business by his brother Robert in 1854. The firm moved to Mansfield, Massachusetts in 1862. The knife is 13¼" overall with a lightly clipped 3" false edge. Very heavy blade, 5/16" thick at the base, the back edge of the knife being rounded. Maker's mark on the obverse of the blade just above the wasp-waisted ricasso. Blade generally clean with just a few scattered spots of very light salt and peppering, a couple of tiny nicks, and very sharp. Heavy, cast S shaped brass guard with flattened quillons. One piece antler grip with a 9/16" German silver washer at the pean. Absolutely untouched/ unaltered; there is no scabbard.
