Almost Flawless 1851 Pattern Officers Shako in Original Box. This is possibly the most perfect example of an officer's model of the 1851 shako to come on the market in the last fifty years or longer. The dark blue wool that covers the pasteboard body is unblemished and has only a few negligible spots of worn nap. The piece rises front to back from 5.5" to 6.5" with a crown 6" in diameter. Attached at the top of the front is its original New York State coat of arms emblem of the highest quality, measuring 1" x 2" and rendered in great detail. The original glazed leather chinstrap is like new and is still attached by buttons bearing the New York "Excelsior" motif. The original leather visor is likewise near perfect with the top glazed black and the underside deep green. The interior retains its tall leather sweatband and quilted red silk lining with only a few minor blemishes from age. With it is its original green pasteboard box, also in excellent condition. The box top itself slopes downward to accommodate the slant of the shako and still has both long cords attached for securing the lid. The body of the box shows some marks from storage but only the lid displays real wear, where the glue has given way and required the top to be stitched to the sides. Written in ink on the top is the size (7 1/4) and the name "E. A. Brown/ Adjt Genl. Dep N.Y." along with a small old yellow tag with the printed block letters "ALBANY." Inside the lid is written in pencil "E. A. Brown/ Adj Genl Dep. N.Y." A simply wonderful example of pre-Civil War headgear in superlative condition that would be impossible to improve upon. Prov. Flayderman Collection.
