Alexander Webb's George Washington Bronze "Evacuation Day" Medal Presented to His Daughter. Diameter measures 2.25" (sight), housed in a small presentation book. The medal, designed by Charles Osborne and engraved by Lea Ahlborn, depicts a statue of George Washington on a pedestal surrounded by thirteen stars, dated 1783-1883. The presentation book reads on the title page, "Struck by the American Numismatic and Archaeological Society by the Request of the Committee for the Celebration of the Day." Webb has inscribed and signed on the page where the medal is laid in, "Carrie Le Roy Webb From Father, Jan 7th, 1885. Alex S. Webb Post Maj Genl."

The book has black cloth covered boards with gilt lettering on the cover, "To Commemorate the Centennial Celebration November 26, 1883 of the Evacuation of New York by the British and the Erection of the Statue of Washington in Wall Street."

Alexander Stewart Webb (1835-1911) graduated from the U.S. Military Academy in 1855 and was commissioned second lieutenant of artillery. During the Civil War he served under Brigadier General William F. Barry as aide-de-camp. He was later promoted to lieutenant colonel under Major General Fitz John Porter and served as chief of staff at the Battle of Antietam. On the first day of the Battle of Gettysburg, Lincoln appointed Webb brigadier general, and Webb was given command of the Philadelphia Brigade. His troops occupied the "Bloody Angle", which saw extreme action during Pickett's Charge, and for his leadership and bravery on the day, Webb was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor. Following the war, Webb was elected president of the College of the City of New York.

Condition: The binding of the presentation book has started to split. Light edge toning with minor foxing to the book pages. The medal is in very fine condition.
