A Sioux Medicine Pipe Picked Up By Louis Rott after the Battle of Little Muddy Creek May 7, 1877. In the spring of 1877 Nelson Miles led a force of 471 men, including Sergeant Rott, along what was essentially the same route followed by Custer the previous year up the Big Horn River Valley. On May 7 he executed an assault on a Minneconjou camp similar to that attempted by Custer the previous year at Little Big Horn. In what would come to be known as the Battle of Little Muddy Creek, the Indians were routed and their leader Lame Deer was killed. In the aftermath of the battle Sergeant Rott picked up this pipe, and inscribed it as follows on three sides of the catlinite stem: "Soiux (sic) Medicine Pipe / Captured at the Battle of Muddy Creek May 7th, 1877 / Louis Rott 7 U S Cav". The wooden stem and pipe are in excellent condition except for one fairly clean break in the catlinite section, which has been re-glued but never restored. It shows good evidence of having been used and smoked. Elaborately mounted and framed by the family along with brass plaques quoting the inscriptions.

Documented "battlefield pick-ups" have long been prized by collectors, and given the context, this is an especially fine and important example. Length is 30", frame 36" x 25".

The pre and post sales experience was wonderful and flawless. Heritage has the best in-house operation I have ever seen and their people are not only professional but fun to work with, especially Steve C.

As for Heritage's online system… Yes the interface is more complex than what we are used to with SAN but what is behind that interface is amazing for sellers and buyers alike. It is real time and for a real serious auction buyer there is nothing better in the auction industry, bar none.
