    Description

A Piece of Old Glory: Star Spangled Banner Relic. Visitors to the Smithsonian Institution's Museum of History can view the original Star Spangled Banner. On the other hand, the winning bidder on this lot can own a piece of the Star Spangled Banner. Prior to its donation to the Smithsonian, the owner of the flag that inspired Francis Scott Key cut off snippits and gave them to friends as souvenirs. While that might be viewed as desecration of a national icon, this was common practice in the 19th century and few thought anything of it. This lot contains a 5" x 2" red and white fragment, matching perfectly a frame of specimens sold in our last Civil War & Military sale. A 19th century caption card reads: "A Piece of the Flag which floated over Fort McHenry at the time of the Bombardment when Key's [sic] composed the Song of the Star Spangled Banner. Presented by Sam Beth Cohen." It is surrounded by gold glitter and is housed in an old frame. With this, you can truly own "a piece of American history."
