A Lock of U. S. Grant's Hair with Magnificent Provenance At the time it was cut, this lock of brown hair belonged to the nation's most acclaimed hero: Gen. Ulysses S. Grant. The substantial cluster of hair, measuring about 2" in length, was provided in 1866 to an unknown female admirer whose last name appears to be"Wetmore." It comes with its original transmission letter written in ink on "Head-Quarters Armies of the United States" stationery that reads in part "I have the pleasure/of sending you according/to our promise, a lock/of General Grants hair,/and only beg you to re-/member your [ ] pledge/not to betray the Service/from which you obtained/it. My lady friends would/ [ ] me, and our/poor chief would be bald." It is signed "Adam Badeau." Severely wounded at Vicksburg in 1863, Badeau served as Military Secretary and Aide-de-Camp to Grant from March, 1864 through May, 1869. A wonderful and very personal memento with impeccable provenance.
