A Large Folk Art Carved Wood Half Plane Model of Manfred von Richtofen, the Red Baron, in his Trademark Fokker Triplane. 41½ inches high by 101½ inches wide by 23 inches deep (105.4 x 257.8 x 58.4 cm).
A marvelously detailed model constructed of carved wood, steel, aluminum, and rubber elements depicting the Red Baron, interior fitted with light to illuminate pilot. The plane itself is red as was Von Richtofen's (the source of his "Red Baron" nickname). The facial features of the pilot, who wears the Iron Cross around his neck, are clearly recognizable as those of Von Richtofen.
The "Red Baron" was the most famous air ace of World War One. In a single month, April 1917-since dubbed "Bloody April"-he downed twenty-two British airplanes. In all he was credited with 80 kills before finally being brought down on April 21, 1918, just before the War's end. Even Von Richtofen's death was gallant; after receiving a fatal shot to the heart, he still managed to land his aircraft before expiring.
It is impossible for us to fully convey the dramatic presence of this massive sculpture (over eight feet in diameter). It truly must be seen to be appreciated. While unsigned, it is clearly the work of a master wood carver and craftsman, and ranks as one of the most appealing and impressive military sculptures we have ever encountered.
