6th Aero Squadron, Fort Kamehameha, Hawaiian Territory Photographic Archive, 1916-1918. The archive was assembled by Virgil Wilkinson of the 6th Aero Squadron beginning in June 1916 when he was stationed at the North Island air training facility at San Diego California and continued to 1919. The images show the formation, growth, deployment, and activities the 6th Aero Squadron and early days of army aviation on the Hawaiian Islands. There are approximately 100 original photographs, many of them large, showing aerial views of the Hawaiian Islands, military aircraft (including army Curtiss N9 seaplanes), and military activities at Fort Kamehameha. There are also images of the men of the squadron in their off hours, including: the squadron baseball team in uniform; at Waikiki Beach at the Outriggers Canoe Club; in Maunaloa Park; and, atop Mount Tantalus. There are pictures of flower vendors selling leis on the dock at Helo and aerial photographs of a volcanic lava flow both at night and during the day. Included are a 1917 Christmas Dinner menu for the 6th Aero Squadron, S.C. Fort Kamehameha, H.T. and a letter from the squadron commander that begins, "There is entirely too much loafing going on about this squadron...officers are showing evidence of the same type of Bolshevism...the principle offenders are non-commissioned officers...from now on, busted non-coms are going to the as common as ticks-in-Texas." A wonderful archive of rare and researchable images. The album pages are brittle, but most photographs are fine or better.
