33rd Regiment Illinois Infantry: Comprehensive Carte-de-Visite [CDV] Albums.
Pair of leather-bound albums which house fifty-six CDVs of soldiers of the 33rd Regiment Illinois Volunteer Infantry, along with a tintype of the regimental nurse. These were assembled by Captain Edwin Lawrence Higgins of Company K. Many of the cartes are inscribed to Edwin and, in several cases, he wrote the names of the soldiers on the backs or fronts of the image. Officers from numerous companies are featured (A, B, D, E, F, H, I & K) with many of the officers having multiple cartes as they advanced in rank throughout the war. There are three CDVs of Higgins, corresponding to his enlistment and rank advancements. There is also a composite CDV of the officers of the regiment (not pictured). Several of the CDVs have back marks from Jackson and Vicksburg, Mississippi where the regiment fought valiantly during that seminal battle. Higgins (1840-1912) answered President Lincoln's call for enlistments in 1861, joining the 7th Illinois Infantry. He re-enlisted in the 33rd Illinois, was wounded at Vicksburg and served until the war was over. The album includes a "frontispiece" CDV of General Ulysses Grant, but the balance of images all relate to members of the 33rd, including drummer boy, surgeon, hospital steward and nurse. One album has twenty-four double-sided leaves, completely filled with photographs, The binding is loose and there are tape repairs reinforcing the spine (likely removable). The second album is identical in format, but is partially full, containing nine cartes altogether. There is wear and cracking to the leather spine. These were acquired by collector L. B. Paul in 1975. The sale contains other material from the 33rd Illinois Collection.
