2nd Mississippi Vols Identified U.S. Model 1841 Mississippi Rifle M1841 .58 Caliber Percussion "Mississippi" rifle, lock marked Remington Herkimer N.Y. and dated 1849, hammer screw replaced. The iron is mostly smooth and gray with areas of dark staining and pitting at the breech and muzzle. Brass fittings exhibit a deep undisturbed patina. Fitted with period replacement fixed rear sight with front sight serving as the bayonet lug. The .58 caliber rifled bore is very good. Wood showing some minor honest use with deep rich patina, cheek carved with initials "J.W.H" and the wrist carved "J.H.C.". Escutcheon plate clearly inscribed "E.V. Maxcy", with the same inscription on the patch box, both unquestionably original.
Edward V. Maxcy enrolled as a private in Company H, 2nd Mississippi Infantry at Corinth May 1861, appointed Corporal June 1, 1863. Captured at Gettysburg July 1, 1863.
The 2nd Mississippi Infantry served with the Army of Northern Virginia, suffering 45% losses at Gettysburg. Only 1 officer and 19 men surrendered at Appomattox.
A very fine Mississippi rifle and most desirable with these period inscriptions.
