    2nd Lt. Benjamin Read Wales [U.S.C.T.]: Civil War Archive.
    Group of four items related to Benjamin Wales, an officer associated with African American troops (United States Colored Troops). 1) 15.75" x 9.75" parchment document appointing B. Read Wales as Second Lieutenant in the First Regiment of Colored Troops, Washington, D.C., May 12, 1865, signed by Assistant Secretary of War Charles Anderson Dana and C. W. Foster, Assistant Adjutant General of Volunteers. 2) a dynamic, framed 21" x 28" recruiting poster on peach paper, Boston [n.d.], signed in type by B. R. Wales, 45th Regiment, Recruiting Officer, titled "Rally! Rally! Rally!!" (a few small areas of loss, not examined out of frame). The 45th fought at the Battles of Kinston and New Bern. 3) a framed 38" x 20.5" Muster-Out Roll of Captain Wales' Co. K, 42nd Regiment of Massachusetts Volunteers, dated September 1, 1864 (large ink stains with toning to one quadrant). 4) a framed albumen photograph of a seated Union officer found in Wales' personal effects, measuring approximately 8" x 10". The shoulder strap and star in the cuff would indicate a rank of Brigadier-General.
