Normandy, Rhineland, The Bulge & Remagen

2nd Infantry "Indianhead" Division: Personal Flag of Colonel Zmicker.
This is a US 48-star, 48" X 92" wool flag with sewn stripes & stars, finished with a canvas header and brass grommets. The flag is marked on the obverse header in blue ink: "2nd Div. Normandy Omaha Beach - Col. Zmicker - Rhineland - Remagen Bridge 7 Mar. - Ardenne Battles - 2 Wounds Over Rhine - Donated to the Rungee Flag Museum 15 Aug 1947" and on the reverse "Kentucky."

This is a Personal Flag. These were acquired privately and carried to war by officers and enlisted men alike. Popular in all theaters of the war, they were often displayed as Camp Flags, an unofficial and non-ceremonial flag, and used by a unit, regiment, or higher echelon organization near the position of their headquarters, within a camp or other location.

This flag was carried by a Colonel Zmicker of the 2nd Division which landed at Omaha Beach on D-Day+1 and participated in the Normandy Campaign. After the Breakout, the 2nd helped take Brest, the major U-Boat base. They participated in the rush to Germany, but withdrew during the Ardennes Offensive. After regaining lost ground, they reentered Germany and guarded the recently-seized Remagen Bridge, before moving across Germany to the Czech border where they were when the war in Europe ended.

Condition: The flag is used, worn and soiled, but otherwise intact save for the tears in the upper and lower fly corners.

    Provenance: Colonel Zmicker.

This flag was formerly in the collection of Dr. Clarence Rungee, and is accompanied by his original museum inventory sheet with identifying information.

For those who did not receive a hard copy of the auction catalog, we present here the introductory comments and history of Dr. Rungee and his remarkable collection. If you scroll further, you will also find various contemporary newspaper articles, as well as a selection of the many letters of donation and transmittal which accompanied the collection and a categorization of the collection.

The pre and post sales experience was wonderful and flawless. Heritage has the best in-house operation I have ever seen and their people are not only professional but fun to work with, especially Steve C.

As for Heritage's online system… Yes the interface is more complex than what we are used to with SAN but what is behind that interface is amazing for sellers and buyers alike. It is real time and for a real serious auction buyer there is nothing better in the auction industry, bar none.
