[Vicksburg Campaign]. Letter from Union Soldier William Cowan. Three pages, bifolium, 4.5" x 7.5" Near Vicksburg, Mississippi, June 9, [1863], on stationery bearing the title and a verse of "The Girl I Left Behind Me," a popular song in the army throughout the nineteenth century, Cowan enthusiastically writes of the pummeling the Union gave the Confederacy during the Siege of Vicksburg, and predicting the failure of General Johnston's attempt at bolstering the Confederate ranks. In part: "We are having glorious times here. We are shelling the rebels day and night and I think they will soon surrender for we'll have got them surrounded, but there will be some fighting done be fore the place is surrendered. We are going up the Yazoo River to cut off Johnston. He is coming to Vicksburg with 20,000 men and we are going to cut him off and I expect we will have a hot time." Smoothed folds, light toning, light soiling, with scattered foxing.
