[Star Spangled Banner] Fragment of the Original Star Spangled Banner with letters. Fragment measures 1.25" long by .5" wide. Attached to a piece of paper inscribed, "Original fragment of the Star Spangled Banner/Katherine Fowler Richey," the fragment consists of blue fabric with a single red thread. It is attached using a metal straight pin.

Also included are two letters. The first is addressed to "Commodore McCandless" of the Department of Commerce, United States Patent Office, and is undated. It reads:

    "Commodore McCandless-
Can you suggest anything further I can do to find more about the Flag Restoration process?
If You should hear anything later (perhaps through Washington contacts) I will greatly appreciate your tell me."

It is signed "Elizabeth C. Berry."

The second letter, dated January 4, 1956, is a response to Miss Berry's inquiry and reads in part: "Responsive to your recent letter, we have been unable to identify a patent on the restoration of flags in the name of Fowler or Richey, from the information given in your letter."

Amelia Fowler (1862-1923) was one of ten women who, for eight weeks, fastening the original Star Spangled Banner to a backing of linen. They attached it using a stitch that Ms. Fowler patented in 1913. Her daughter, Katherine Fowler Richey (1889-1949), followed in her mother's footsteps and was also involved in flag restoration, caring for some 5000 historical flags. She used her mother's stitch until switching to sewing machine.

Additionally, the flag is accompanied by a five-page evaluation by noted flag expert and textile conservator, Fonda Thomsen in which she states "it is my opinion, as a Textile Conservator, that the fragment is consistent with the materials of the original Star Spangled Banner."
