Personal Copy of Capt. Brown Manning, Hampton's Legion

[Confederate Imprint] Regulations For the Army of the Confederate States, 1862. Richmond: J. W. Randolph, 1862. Octavo. 420 pages. Tables. Original cloth boards, rebacked using the original endpapers (terminal endpaper missing). Modern morocco spine label with titles stamped in gilt. Original cloth on the boards worn, contents toned but sound. Overall very good condition. This is a quite special copy which belonged to Brown Manning, Company C of the Manning Guard, Hampton Legion. Captain Manning has ornately inscribed the front free endpaper in a modified gothic script: "Capt. Manning/ Manning Guard/ "Company C"/ Hampton Legion/ Richmond, Va/ CSA/ 18th April 1862". Interestingly the piece is also inscribed on the title page. The Hampton Legion was organized by Wade Hampton in early 1861 and elements of his Legion participated in virtually every battle in the Eastern Theater of operations. Parrish & Willingham, 2361.
