    Description

[Civil War]. Beautiful Engraved Silver Plate Coffee Urn Presented to Union Captain Henry Clay Ranney by the Officers and Men of the 1st Brigade, 3rd Division, 5th Army Corps at Fredericksburg, 1863. Silver plate. 17-inches tall; approximately 7-inches in diameter. "1990 / 16" hand-stamped on the bottom of the urn. The front of the urn is delicately engraved with the presentation: "Camp near Fredericksburg Va. April 1863 / A token of Friendship and Esteem to Capt. / H. C. Ranney A.A.G. / From Officers and Men of 1st Brig 3rd Div / 5th Army Corps Army of the Potomac / One Country One Flag One Destiny". The presentation is set within a large oak leaf/acorn wreath which is flanked on either side by panoplies of American flags and cannon barrels. The reverse side of the urn exhibits a similar wreath design with a large armorial device engraved within.

Henry Clay Ranney was born June 1, 1829 in Freedom, Portage County, Ohio. He was from a family of lawyers and became a prominent Cleveland lawyer. When the war commenced he enlisted October 10, 1862 as a Captain and was commissioned into the U.S. Volunteers Adjutant Generals Department. He was assigned duty on the staff of General E. B. Tyler commanding the 1st Brigade, 3rd Division, 5th Army Corps, Army of the Potomac. He was with this command and served with distinction at the battles of Fredericksburg and Chancellorsville as well as other minor engagements. He resigned for reasons unknown on June 1, 1863. He returned to Ohio where he had a successful career as a judge. He died October 8, 1913.

Condition: Excellent. Bright, no tarnishing (the photos give an impression of some tarnishing but it is simply an artifact of the lighting). The presentation engraving is shallower in spots due to the plating process. A most impressive display piece.

This was my first time dealing with an auction house, and I am 100% completely impressed with Heritage. There is not an aspect of this process that I have a critique for.
