    Description

[Battle of Gettysburg]. Three Letters by CSA Captain Samuel Moseley to his mother dated in 1863 and 1864. In a letter dated July 17, 1863, Mosley writes to his mother about his regiment's participation during the Battle of Gettysburg: " the battle of Gettysburg was one of the hardest contested battles of the war, we were in it two three days, the first day we drove the emany [sic] more than two miles, killing a great many of them, at night they fortified themselves on the mountains where it was impossible to dislodge. Some I do not know how many prisoners we took but some 5 or 6 thousand." The letter is written in pencil and has complete separations at folds but no paper loss.

In a letter dated December 8, 1863 Mosley opens up about his wishes to be home for Christmas and the 17 casualties that were lost during battle: "our regtt lost 17 men in all, killed, missing & wounded, two of my men are missing . . & I think they are taken prisoners." The third letter in the group is dated February 4, 1864, written on pictorial letterhead depicting the "Desperate Charge of Fremont's Body Guard, Oct. 25th, 1861." Moseley writes his mother letting her know he has returned safely to camp. The final document is a partly-printed document (7.25" x 6.5") granting Moseley a sick furlough of thirty days. It reads: "At the expiration of this Furlough, or as soon as exchanged, the bearer will report without delay at Camp Lee." Heavy wear, creasing and light dampstaining. Bits of paper loss occurring at folds.

Samuel P. Moseley served in Company "E" of the 21st Virginia Infantry. He was both wounded and taken prisoner in 1864. Date and method of discharge is unknown but 21st Virginia Infantry mustered out on April 9, 1865 at Appomattox Court House.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
