Von Steuben's Regulations for American Troops, owned by a Valley Forge officer

[American Revolution]. Friedrich Wilhelm von Steuben. Regulations for the Order and Discipline of the Troops of the United States. Part I. Philadelphia: Styner and Cist, 1779. First edition. Twelvemo. 154, [10] pages. With seven (of eight) folded engraved plates. Contemporary calf-backed boards. Text leaves from another title (American Monthly Museum for June 1775) used as endpapers as well as front and rear flyleaves. Signed by the owner, Edward Yarbrough, numerous times on the front endpapers, as well as by others throughout. Yarbrough served as a captain in the 3rd North Carolina Regiment and was at Valley Forge in 1777-1778.

Commissioned by Congress on March 29, 1779: "Congress judging it of the greatest importance to prescribe some invariable rules for the order and discipline of the troops, especially for the purpose of introducing an uniformity in their formation and maneuvers, and in the service of the camp: Ordered, that the following regulations be observed by all the troops of the United States, and that all general and other officers cause the same to be executed with all possible exactness. By Order, John Jay, President." General von Steuben was a Prussian military officer who organized the training of the inexperienced American forces. His manual, known as the "Blue Book" would be widely distributed throughout the country. It remained as the standard military regulation book up until 1812.

Condition: The binding is worn, with most of the material at the spine missing. The cover is worn with bumped corners. There appears to be faint, illegible writing in black ink on the front cover. End leaves are worn, with varying degrees of tearing and soiling. The internal pages are toned, with soiling, dampstaining, and foxing. With occasional contemporary ink notations throughout. Lacking Plate IV. Other plates have varying degrees of paper loss.
