William A. Rice 14th Conn. ID Pin WIA at Gettysburg KIA At The Wilderness.
William A. Rice of the 14th Connecticut Vol. wore this pin. He was wounded at the Battle of Gettysburg, and burned to death at the Battle of the Wilderness.... his body never recovered! This very pin was excavated at the Wilderness Battle Field in April 1961. The pin is in the shape of a 6 pointed star, and since the 14th Connecticut was in the 2nd Corps, there is a 2nd Corps cloverleaf in the center of the piece with the numbers and letters "14", "C" and "B". Around the center is engraved "Sergt. Wm. A. Rice, Co. C". This is truly one of the most historic ID pins we have offered at auction. Included is an article which appeared in the "North South Trader" in July 1989 titled "Sergeant Rice's Identification Pin". For a dug pin it is in fine condition, measuring 1 1/3" x 1 1/3". A remarkable piece.
