Very Fine Example of a Civil War Enlisted Man's Forage Cap with Original Insignia.
This forage cap belonged to Private John R. Miller of Co. B, 50th Battalion Ohio National Guard and Co. H, 169th Ohio Infantry. The cap is made of blue wool. It lacks the chin strap and side buttons. There are two brass die-cut insignia on the crown, reading "B/ 50". Size not known. No maker's mark. Glazed brown cotton lining with leather sweatband. Some mothing and wear. Two splits to the partially detached sweatband. The lining is held in place by the stitching in the crown. Along with the cap worn by Private Miller are a number of items he acquired while serving, including: a standard U.S. waist belt plate ("puppy paw") attached to a leather belt with two Infantry cartridge boxes. The lot also includes two cap boxes. All are in fairly rough condition (verdigris to metal parts, stiff and degrading leather).

The archive of John R. Miller is made complete by his 1863 Muster Roll and numerous images of him at the time of the war and soon after. Two O.V.I. Reunion ribbons are a part of the story, as well as an "In Memoriam" news clipping and a photo of the hat placed on Miller's grave beside his headstone. This personal archive including a cap not usually found with the orignal insignia offers a complete story of a soldier from the 169th O.V. I.
