U.S. Militia Bell Crown Shako, Circa 1825. Stands 7 1/2" high, slightly sloped undecorated visor, 1 5/8" peak at the back with 1" embossed leather reinforcing band around the base including rear peak extension. Very fine overall condition with some finish crackling only on the top of the crown and absolutely no flaking. Provisions for a plume, a leather convex 2" rosette/ cockade on the front at top with one piece eagle button set in the center. Regulation style 1821 eagle front plate retaining much original gilt, with a red wool lined gold bullion cord suspension on the front. Octagonal 1 3/4" copper side buttons incorporating eagle with riband motif. Retains the thin soft leather sweatband rising to 3 1/2" at the front. Very nice example of this classic piece of American headgear as used extensively by both militia and regular establishment units for twenty years.

From the estate of Houston collector Brent Burg.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
