Union Frock Coat Identified to Lt. Col. Normand Smith of the 13th New Hampshire.
Wool double-breasted frock coat. Two vertical rows of seven General Staff infantry buttons, for a total of fourteen on the front. There are four infantry coat buttons on the "tails" and three infantry cuff buttons on each sleeve. The lining is green silk with white cotton lining in the sleeves. Velvet collar is worn. It has two shoulder boards signifying the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. The silk lining is soiled and worn in spots. There is scattered mothing, most of a minor nature, the worst being located on the bottom of the back side. It is in good overall condition.

The coat belonged to Lt. Col. Normand Smith of the 13th Regiment New Hampshire Infantry. He enlisted as a Captain on September 19, 1862 and mustered out June 21, 1865. He was wounded September 29, 1864 at Fort Harrison, Virginia (Chapin's Farm). He was promoted to Lieutenant Colonel on October 28, 1864. He fought at Fredericksburg, Suffolk, Bermuda Hundred, Cold Harbor, Petersburg, Mine Explosion, Ft. Harrison and Fair Oaks. We include a binder of research material related to Smith. Apparently, his swords were retained by family members. The coat, along with a sash (no longer present), were sold.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
