    Description

503rd Parachute Infantry Painted Jump Jacket

WWII U.S. Army M1942 503rd Parachute Infantry Jump Jacket. A fantastic paratrooper cotton twill jacket with four large pockets and snap closures and complete with issue cloth belt. The nomenclature tag in the lower right pocket is washed out so no details are legible. All snaps are present and functioning and the Conmar zipper operates smoothly. Though not identified to a specific soldier, the jacket does have a laundry number "W-5493" written in ink on the interior near the collar. There is a database of laundry numbers online so with persistence the owner's name might be found. Research and luck may ultimately identify the original owner. This jacket is made special by the fact it has a painted 503rd Parachute Infantry insignia on the upper right pocket flap and a large hand-drawn, rather crude jump wing with "11th Airborne" superimposed over it.

The 503rd was an independent regiment serving in the Pacific Theater during WWII. Perhaps they are most well-known for their February 16, 1945 jump on Fortress Corregidor ("The Rock") to liberate the island from the Japanese.

Condition: Very good. A few scattered stains; some old field repairs on the back of the jacket; 503rd insignia on pocket flap worn in spots.
