    Description

70th Fighter Squadron A-2 Flight Jacket

WWII Type A-2 Leather Flight Jacket With "White Knights" 70th Fighter Squadron Patch. A well-used russet-brown leather A-2, small size (size label not present) manufactured by the Aero Leathers Company of Beacon, New York. The black silk nomenclature label is present but frayed and hard to read. To the left chest is sewn a 5 ½-inch leather 70th Fighter Squadron patch. The patch features the hand-painted white knight with yellow lightning bolt-lance astride a charging white horse with yellow wings, beneath which is written "White Knights". The left shoulder has faint traces of what appears to be a hand-painted 13th Air Force insignia (the 70th Fighter Squadron being part of the 347th Fighter Group which was attached to the 13th Air Force). All snaps and hooks are present and in working condition. The Talon zipper still functions properly. The 70th Fighter Squadron flew missions in the South and Southwest Pacific theater employing P-39 Aircobra, P-40 Warhawk, and P-38 Lightning aircraft.

Condition: Very good. The surface of the leather is a bit dry with moderate uniform scuffing and typical wear in the repetitive movement areas. There is a small hole on the upper left shoulder near the seam. The leather is worn at the fold of the collar. The tan cotton lining is frayed at the neck area with some scattered short tears elsewhere. There is a small repair to the right front pocket on the inside lining.
