WWII Type A-2 Leather Flight Jacket Identified to Lt. Robert Newton Dippy, 314th Bomb Squadron. A beautiful A-2, size 40, with lightly tooled and hand-colored pilot's leather pilot's wings and leather name tag stamped "R. N. Dippy", each sewn on the upper left breast. Sewn just above the left pocket is a 4 ¾-inch in diameter 314th Bomb Squadron patch, hand-painted on canvas. The distinctive insignia features a fox dressed as a mailman dropping bombs from his mail bag. Silver lieutenant's bars are hand-painted on each shoulder strap and a standard cotton Army Air Force winged-star is sewn to the upper right sleeve. Of particular note is a brass English-made Acme "Thunderer" whistle suspended from the zipper pull. All snaps and hooks are present and in working condition. The Talon zipper is functioning properly.

The 314th Bomb Squadron, 21st Bomb Group, was an operational training unit for the 3rd Air Force and additionally flew anti-submarine operations in the Gulf of Mexico during the war.

Condition: Excellent. The leather is still supple and shows modest signs of use. The lining has been completely replaced and likely the zipper at that time. The jersey cuffs and waistband may be replacements and are in excellent condition.
