Famed RAF Pilot Roland "Bee" Beaumont's Irvin Flight Jacket
WWII Royal Air Force Ace Wing Commander Roland Prosper Beaumont's Irvin Flight Jacket, Sweater, Cap and Boots. Comprising: 1.) Leather, fleece-lined Irvin flight jacket stenciled on the underside of the collar "BEAUMONT R. P." All straps and buckles are present and all zippers in working condition. 2.) R.A.F. officers' side cap. Quality construction with fine blue wool and two R.A.F. buttons at the front. Satin lined with velour sweatband. No markings present. 3.) White wool turtleneck flying sweater. No markings present. 4.) R.A.F. blue wool trousers. 5.) Black lace-up leather boots with leather soles and steel reinforced heels. No markings present. 6.) Modern 5 x 7-inch black and white photograph of Beaumont in uniform and signed by him.Roland Prosper "Bee" Beaumont, CBE, DSO & Bar, DFC & Bar (1920-2001) was a British fighter pilot and test pilot during WWII. His operational flying career began in 1939 flying Hawker Hurricanes with No. 87 Squadron stationed at Lille, in France. After the evacuation of France, he returned to England and flew during the Battle of Britain. He served as a test pilot between operational periods, his last operation being tasked with the interception of V-1 Flying Bombs, personally claiming 32 destroyed. On October 122, 1944 he was shot down by flak while attacking a troop train. He spent the remainder of the war a prisoner in Stalag Luft III-A. This group was previously in the collection of Malcolm Smith, the long-time assistant secretary to the Battle of Britain Association.
Condition: 1.) Very good some crazing to the finish of the leather but generally in better than normally encountered condition. 2.) Excellent. 3.) Very good. The sweater shows a few period repairs and some soiling. 4.) Very good. 5.) Very good. 6.) Excellent.
