    Description

Very Nice, Identified New York Sate Issue Infantry Enlisted Man's Frock Coat, C. 1861. Very fine overall sound complete condition. 9 button front retaining all of the original early style Scovill New York State seal buttons, with two buttons on each tail. Nice sleeve cut, especially for an enlisted coat, with standup collar rising to 2 1/4" at the back. Light blue worsted wool piping at collar and cuffs, both of which have two New York state cuff size buttons, with RMDC backmarks. Really excellent condition with just some minor moth 'tracking', one small hole on the right front collar, and some honest wear to the piping along the top edge of the collar. The collar is actually lined with brown velvet, doubtless a field modification to provide the wearer with additional comfort. Raw cut skirt and slight tufting at shoulders. Lining excellent, entirely of black, loose weave and rather coarse, polished cotton, with padded breasts. White cotton sleeve lining. Lining just exhibits a few small worn areas and a few seam openings with no loss, but 100% present and very sound. Tail pockets with brown polished cotton lining. The coat is accompanied by a 4/28/91 ink script note which states the coat belonged to "Roger Hand brother of William Henry Hand of Nyack and it remained in the Hand family until 1991 and signed by a direct lineal descendant. A cursory search of records does not reveal a Roger Hand in a New York regiment, but further research is certainly warranted. Exceptionally nice, untouched, example of this scarce Civil War Enlisted man's issue frock coat, showing signs of obvious wear and use.
