US M1864 Light Artillery Shako With Original Insignia, Plume and Suspensory Cords. Dark blue wool covered body exhibits about 15% moth damage; which is actually exceptionally good for this scarce piece of Civil War US headgear. The majority of those that appear on the market today have been completely re-covered because of extensive mothing resulting from where they were stored. Black, hard leather crown and tarred 1 1/4" black leather band around the base perfect, as are the unbound leather visor and the 3/4" chinstrap with leather loop and single tine brass buckle. Gilt eagle side buttons. Retains the original gilt brass suspension loops on the sides, plume socket with flaming bomb at base, and crossed cannons and spread wing eagle on the front. All perfect, as is the correct original red horsehair plume. Also retains the complete set of red wool suspensory cords including triple woven suspensions on front and back of shako. Aguilette with red wool tassels, all in about perfect condition. Interior with 1 1/2" black Moroccan leather sweatband, one hole, showing minor use but excellent and very sound. Leather plume socket. Perfect circular green label on inside crown "4 / Horstmann Bros. & Co. / Manufacturer of / Military Goods / 5th and Cherry Sts. / Philadelphia." An exceptionally nice example of this very rare piece of US regulation headgear.

The pre and post sales experience was wonderful and flawless. Heritage has the best in-house operation I have ever seen and their people are not only professional but fun to work with, especially Steve C.

As for Heritage's online system… Yes the interface is more complex than what we are used to with SAN but what is behind that interface is amazing for sellers and buyers alike. It is real time and for a real serious auction buyer there is nothing better in the auction industry, bar none.
