Description
Union Corporal's Forage Cap & Frock Coat Set Id'D to Corp. George Schmultz,of Co. G, 188th Pennsylvania Vol. Schmultz enlisted on February 27th, 1864 as a Corporal and served for nearly two years. He was discharged at City Point, VA on December 14, 1865. This set was pictured on pages 20 and 21 in The Illustrated History of American Civil War Relics by Stephen W. Sylvia and Michael J. O'Donnell published in 1978, one of the earliest modern reference books for Civil War collectors. At that time, the items were in the Collection of John Henry Kurtz.
Excellent Forage Cap /u with original brass lettering denoting Corporal Schmultz's unit with a "G" over "188" over "PV" standing for Co. G, 188th Pennsylvania Volunteers. Above that is a super 18th Corps Badge....one of the nicest examples I've seen. An outstanding cap with all original insignia.
Nice example of Corporal Schmultz's enlisted frock coat with original corporal's chevrons and brass shoulder scales. This is one of the "top of the line" sets that rarely comes along.
