Superb Civil War M1858 Cavalryman's "Hardee" Hat.
An extremely nice example bearing the brass insignia of Company D, 8th Regiment of U.S. cavalry. The 1-inch tall stamped-brass "D" sits atop a ¾-inch stamped-brass "8", all this above the large 3 ½-inch crossed saber insignia of the cavalry. All the brass insignia is held in place by matchsticks or similar wooden pieces. The 3-inch wide brim retains its two rows of stitching reinforcement and is turned up on the right side and secured by the regulation stamped brass eagle device. Original worsted yellow hat cords and black silk hatband are set at the base of the 5 ½-inch tall crown. A tall black ostrich plume affixed to the left side. The inside of the hat features a 2 ¼-inch wide leather sweatband. The inside crown has a gloss-black label lettered in gilt: "A. & K. / U.S. Army / [Eagle and panoply of arms] / EXTRA / Manufacture. / 7 / No. 3", and with what are presumably inspector's stamps "A.S.".

Condition: Excellent. The outside of the hat is only dusty and slightly soiled from storage. There is one trivial nick where the brim folds in the back. The ostrich feather remains almost entirely intact. The morocco leather sweatband is 80% complete with some loss along the front edge.

This was my first time dealing with an auction house, and I am 100% completely impressed with Heritage. There is not an aspect of this process that I have a critique for.
