Rare U.S. Regulation M1872 Indian Wars Folding Hat. Although despised by many, the M1872 was the hat generally worn by Custer's men. Since the hat had no visor, it could be folded and easily carried. Enlisted men complained because it was too flimsy and provided little protection from the elements. Made of black felt with a 1-inch wide black silk band with a bow on one side. The crown is 5 ½-inches top to bottom without the crease. 2 5/8-inch brim on the sides. Black silk binding on the edge of the brim. Hooks fore and aft to hold the brim up. 2-inch wide brown leather sweatband. No maker or size marks present. Surviving complete examples in any condition are hard to find. A contemporary report indicated that after 120 hours of actual wear in the field the hats became unserviceable.

Condition: Fair. With a 2 x 2-inch crude repair on the back of the crown and small hole in the front of the crown. Small hole at the fold in the front brim.
Property from the Estate of Kenneth S. "Bud" Adams, Jr.

This was my first time dealing with an auction house, and I am 100% completely impressed with Heritage. There is not an aspect of this process that I have a critique for.
