Rare Civil War Regulation Artillery Musician's or Bugler's Shell Jacket. With its distinctive facing stripes of red worsted tape, this artillery bugler's jacket was among the most colorful uniforms of the Civil War. The three-eighths of an inch red worsted tape continues, as per regulation, onto the 2 ½-inch tall stand-up collar, cuffs, lower edge and back seams. Both "pillows" designed to support the saber belt remain on the back. The jacket has all twelve original small general service buttons extending down the front along with two at each side of the collar and two at each functional cuff. The interior lining is an off-white. The lining of the upper left sleeve is marked "1" and the other stamped in black "3 / SA" stamp indicating size and the fact this specimen was accepted by Philadelphia's Schuylkill Arsenal. Size 3 shell jackets seem to be somewhat rarer than the examples normally encountered. The single interior pocket is lined in same material. There is an additional marking on the lining of the back "22 / [illegible] / 122". A noteworthy addition to any American militaria collection.

Condition: An excellent example, free of any visible insect damage or staining. Appears little or unused.
