    Private-Purchase Haversack I.D.'d to Rhode Islander Anthony Richmond Dawson. Non-regulation, private-purchase haversack, measuring 13" across and 11" tall, not counting leather shoulder strap. It is covered in rubberized, black oil cloth. The front panel has embossed or raised floral designs (bellflowers or tulips). An interior buckle has a patent date of February 18, 1862. The number "801" is painted in orange paint on the lower edge of the interior. It shows typical light wear and is sound. According to an 1989 letter from a collector of Rhode Island Civil War artifacts, the haversack belonged to Anthony Richmond Dawson. His military record indicates he mustered in on May 2, 1861 and died of disease on May 6,1864. He served with the 1st Rhode Island Detached Militia [1st Bull Run], 3rd Rhode Island Volunteers, Battery B First United States Artillery [Fort Wagner, Siege of Charleston] and the 14th Rhode Island Heavy Artillery.
